About Stott Pilates

Joseph Pilates

Joseph Pilates, was born in Germany in 1880. As a young child he had suffered with asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever. Later in life, Pilates went to work as a nurse for the war wounded. These men benefited by Joseph’s cleverly designed apparatus to rehabilitate them right from their hospital beds and wheelchairs. Taking these ideas to the United States, Joseph and his wife Clara opened up a studio in New York City where the pilates method began. Joseph Pilates lived to be 87. He passed away in 1967.

Stott Pilates

Taking the original teachings of Joseph Pilates, Moira Merrithew, a former professional dancer, used contemporary knowledge of the human body to modify these techniques, thus founding Stott Pilates. Stott Pilates is an anatomically-based approach to Joseph Pilates’ original exercise method. Its exercises safely deliver optimal strength, flexibility and endurance, without adding bulk. This stress-relieving method can be performed on a mat or using special Stott Pilates equipment.
